- (англ. schooner), парусное судно с косыми парусами. В первые появились в Северной Америке в XVIII в. и имели 2-3 мачты первоначально только с косыми парусами (гафельные шхуны). Они обладали такими достоинствами как большая грузоподъемность, возможность ходить очень круто к ветру, имели на борту меньшую команду, чем требовали суда с прямым парусным вооружением, и поэтому получили широкое распространение в самых различных модификациях. Шхуны не использовались как военные парусники, но у пиратов пользовались популярностью. Шхуны русского флота имели до 16 пушек.
